Psychotherapeutic counselling – my approach

My approach to psychotherapeutic counselling is guided by the following…
I believe that you were born unique. I also believe that you have the ability to change and adapt to the world around you and that you deserve the right to be the best you can be.

Our early experiences and relationships play a major part in shaping the person we become. As one of my clients, I'll encourage you to use our talks together to examine yourself so you can begin to see yourself more clearly. By helping you make links between your past and present experiences, I will help you identify any aspects of yourself or your feelings that you'd like to change.

The therapy you receive from me will lead to a greater understanding of who you are as a person and can help you to unravel what may be happening to you in your relationships and other areas of your life. It will also help you to understand your needs as an individual and this greater awareness often leads to making new choices about how to live your life in a way that leaves you feeling more fulfilled and in control.

I am a member of UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) and abide by their code of professional ethics. Only therapists who meet the UKCP's exacting standards and training requirements can become members. This means you can feel reassured that you're getting the best possible help available. Any discussions we have are strictly confidential.

Talking to an experienced, impartial psychotherapeutic counsellor can help you to manage:

Anger is a perfectly natural emotion. However, if you're experiencing excessive outbursts of anger or rage, it can be very upsetting for those around you and can damage your relationships.

Counselling will help you:

  • Discover what triggers your anger
  • Learn how to express your emotions more effectively
  • Learn ways to keep your anger under control and find healthy ways to let off steam

Relationships (past or present)
All relationships go through difficulties such as illness, financial strain, betrayal and separation. Whatever stage your relationship is at, psychotherapeutic counselling will help you:

  • Make sense of what's going on around you by listening sensitively to your concerns
  • Exploring the areas you feel need improvement
  • Increase your confidence and ability to cope with change
  • Positively influence your relationships for the better

Sometimes problems with a past relationship are repeated in current relationships. Counselling will also help you:

  • Better understand your role in the past relationship and its difficulties
  • Increase your awareness of what went wrong and why
  • Help you leave negative feelings in the past, where they belong, and move on

Depression and anxiety
Trying to cope with a difficult past can be quite depressing and affects your ability to enjoy life. It can also lead to feelings of anxiety about the future. In order to relieve these feelings, some people use alcohol, food or drugs to comfort themselves. Talking to a psychotherapeutic counsellor can help you:

  • Become aware of what triggers your negative feelings
  • Understand and come to terms with your past and, if necessary, grieve your loss
  • Identify any unhelpful ways of thinking, feeling and behaving and modify them
  • Equip you with ways to cope with what life throws at you
  • Become a happier and more positive person
